Pataday

Once-daily treatment for itchy eyes

Pharmacologic class:

Antihistamine/mast cell stabilizer

Active ingredient:

Olopatadine HCl 0.2%; oph soln; contains benzalkonium chloride.

Indication:

Treatment of ocular itching associated with allergic conjunctivitis.

Pharmacology:

Olopatadine is a relatively selective histamine H1 antagonist and an inhibitor of the release of histamine from mast cells. Decreased chemotaxis and inhibition of eosinophil activation has also been demonstrated.

In clinical trials, Pataday solution, given once a day, was effective in the treatment of ocular itching associated with allergic conjunctivitis.

Adults and Children:

<3yrs: not recommended. ≥3yrs: 1 drop in affected eye once daily.

Precautions:

Contact lenses (remove; may reinsert 10 minutes after administration, if eye is not red). Pregnancy (Cat.C). Nursing mothers.

Adverse reactions:

Cold syndrome, pharyngitis, ocular effects (eg, blurred vision, burning/stinging, dry eye, foreign body sensation, hyperemia, keratitis, lid edema, pruritus), headache, asthenia, rhinitis, sinusitis, taste perversion.
